2008 Charter | University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is Canada's third-largest university and consistently ranks among the top 40 universities in the world. Incorporated in 1908, UBC is a public university comprising 12 faculties, 11 schools and 22 centres and institutes at two principal campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna, as well as at numerous hospitals and health authority research institutes throughout the province.

A globally-oriented centre for research and learning, UBC offers more than 45,000 students a range of innovative undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in the arts, sciences, social sciences, medicine, law, commerce and other disciplines. Basic, applied and interdisciplinary research in all faculties is central to UBC's mandate; its researchers currently attract $470 million annually in research funding from government, industry and non-profit foundations. UBC consistently ranks among the top Canadian universities attracting funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Additionally, UBC is ranked within the top 10 North American universities - and first among Canadian universities - by number of U.S. life sciences patents filed, and the quality of activity generated from those patents, including spin-off company creation.

UBC's strategic vision for the 21st century is described in its landmark Trek 2010 document. Already an outstanding Canadian university and a leader in campus sustainability, UBC is poised to become one of the world's leading universities. For additional information, please visit www.ubc.ca.
